Our customers in the tobacco industry work with rolls with a fixed roll length. It is therefore inevitable to make a weld every now and then, if only because the mother roll is not infinitely long.
One of our largest customers encountered that, despite an improved welding tape, problems arose with some regularity, especially when folding. The welding tape was too stiff, causing the fold to open. Continuous improvement programs had already resolved many causes of machine stops, putting our weld in the top 3 of disruptions.
A weld is not only the sticking of two rolls together, it is also a risk of disruption when processing on the packaging machine at the customer.
Modern machines detect the weld and the package in which it ends up is automatically ejected. This means that the weld must endure three operations:
The weld must pass through every step to prevent the machine from malfunctioning. The processing of BOPP / ALU / BOPP for sealed innerliner is the most critical,
What we did
Together we have started a project to solve this problem. Finding the right type of tape in particular turned out to be a challenge. In the end, a number of tapes were tested and we even made rolls with 25 welds for this. Ultimately, a weld made with an aluminum tape turned out to be the solution. This is easy to detect and cut and can also be folded well.
During one of the visits to this customer, we received a compliment for the collaboration and the result. The added value of a product technologist sometimes lies in small things.
